Cookingivq3437 days agoVisit Thelma place today I had the porkchops,rice cabbage and dressing overall the food was good the dressing need more sage for flavor.even though this was a busy time of day that have to learn to stay on top of cooking their meats .no chicken was ready at the timeof our service. We both had oxtail but with different sides. The cabbage was a little salty but would definitely not deter us from going back to Thelma's!!! Great service is rare to come by but you guys executed!!! Angela T.September 29, 2024Today, while I was driving through Bessemer, Alabama, I noticed a Soul food restaurant (The Back Porch). This place reminded me of Soul Food restaurants in my hometown. I walked in around 11:30am today and there was a line of customers waiting for Sunday dinner. I ordered the "Sunday special "of Baked chicken with cornbread dressing/cranberry sauce with side of collard greens and macaroni and cheese with cornbread. Also, I ordered an extra side of cabbage greens. Oh my goodness, the food was very delicious! I enjoyed eating my dinner in the patio area of the front of the restaurant on this beautiful day. Sadie W.August 16, 2024Must try! My daughter and I came here on a Friday during lunchtime. There were a steady flow of patrons dining in or grabbing their food to go. This is a meat and 3. One of the best I've had in a long time. The servers were very friendly and patient (except for 1). I told them it was our first time here and they were very welcoming! I ordered the fried catfish, collard greens, and chicken Alfredo as a side. My daughter ordered the pork chop, corn, and chicken Alfredo as a side. She also ordered chocolate cake for desert. The fish was fried and seasoned to perfection I see why everyone was there for that. The greens were great too. The Alfredo.....not so much. It was very bland. The cornbread went well with the greens. I tasted my daughter pork chop and it was ok. She tasted my fish and of course she liked it better than the pork chop so I ordered her a side of catfish alone and she at that with her corn. The chocolate cake was AMAZING!!! I ordered a meat and two sides (fried catfish, mac n cheese & cabbage). I had to meal to go. I really enjoyed the meal. The cabbage was perfectly seasoned (not too much not too little), the mac n cheese was good. And catfish was fried nicely... just right. The meats are great and I really enjoy how they are consistently changed daily with various choices every day. The Ox Tails are the best I have tasted in any Soul Food Restaurant. Val W.June 10, 2022Y'all! I never heard of this place until my husband brought me a plate from them earlier this week. My husband had jury duty this week. Ironically, a friend of his had jury duty as well. When they were allowed lunch, he and his friend went to dined here. My husband said there was a greeter that acknowledged them as soon as they walked up. He also said the inside was nice and there was a good variety of food to choose. My husband knows I have not had neck bones in a while so he got me a to go plate of neck bones, Mac and cheese, greens, and a piece of jalapeño cornbread. Everything was good, but the neck bones and cornbread were the best to me. This hidden gem is a place to stop by if you like soul food! I plan on visiting in person soon.Posted on Yelp
